Scrum on down to see Mela legends

A host of former Great Britain and New Zealand legends of Rugby League will be coming to Bradford as part of the Bradford Mela weekend.

Bradford Council's Leisure Services in partnership with the 'Connecting Communities' project are bringing the players to Peel Park on Sunday, 14 June at 1pm.

The GB All Stars v New Zealand Masters is taking place as part of Bradford Mela - this year celebrating its 21st anniversary.

The GB All Stars team will include Leeds legend Garry Schofield as the captain along with former Bulls Legend Paul Newlove, Gary Connelly, Martin McDermott, Mick Cassidy, Steve Hampson, Paul Loughlin, Tommy Martyn, Graham Steadman, John Hammer, Jason Critchley and Ikram Butt.

The New Zealand Masters team include former Bulls legends Gary Mercer, Brad Hepi, Carl Hall and Carlos Hassan as well as Mike Umaga, Martyn Moana, Willie Poaching, Esene Faimalo and Villa Matautia.

The New Zealand Masters will be performing the HAKA, Maori traditional dance, prior to the start of the main game.

Coun Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Environment and Culture, said: "The Bradford Mela always offers something for everyone to enjoy and this year - the 21st anniversary year - is no exception. This is the first time that a rugby match of this calibre has been held as part of the event and I am sure it will attract a number of people and be a great success."

Tony Reeves, Bradford Council Chief Executive, said: "Sport offers a great opportunity to bring communities together and this event at the Mela is a great example of sport entertaining people and bringing them together.

"Sport allows young people to build aspirations and this will be a great chance to enjoy some world class rugby."
